I’m not saying it’s probable, but…

Did President Bush (or his administration in general) just Wag the Dog?
They had to know that Miers would have a tough time of it. Just plain had to. But did they actually count on it and have it all planed out so that she would pull her name at a pre-planned time? Say, just before Indictments would flow on Plame-gate?

Get the conservative base riled up over a pick you never INTENDED to make it on the bench, then pick someone that you really wanted and that the base will fawn over, and more importantly, staunchly defend, so that the other mess(es) you are facing get lost in the shuffle. The Dems (or in this situation, all sides) can only fight so many battles at once, and distracting people with another pick keeps them from focusing on Libby being indicted and Rove possibly next…

I’m just saying. I’m not one to give the Bush camp credit for much, and maybe this is just a cosmic coincidence (and Bush really, truly did believe she would get confirmed). It just makes you think…

I will now put on my tinfoil hat and look-out for whatever MLB is up too…

But look who he just nominated - a judge who was a lone dissenter in a case of religious “displays” on government property. His dissent (he thought it was legal) was based ont he notion that there was a Santa statue there, and therefore was not purely religious in nature, as Santa is not a religious figure. You just know that there will be loads of debate, and possiblity fillibustering on this guy, when even Arlen Specter is worried.

Loads of debate means less press time devoted to Iraq, Libby-gate, Rove investigation, and so on. The current administration is making it very difficult to focus on the problems, which is of course what they should be doing to save their skins…

[...] I've known Andy(I) for a long, long time and so I believe he'll forgive me when I say: Bud, you've done run right off the intellectual tracks. The Miers withdrawal - a timed, planned diversion from potential indictments in the Affaire de Plame? Dude, I scored two points from pure Machiavelli himself on that stupid quiz they made us take junior year of high school and even I couldn't conceive of a situation under which such a "Wag the Dog" scenario could in any way, shape or form be viable.
